3. Multilingual Disaster Relief Information | 다중언어로 된 재난지원 정보
Issue:
In response to COVID-19, federal and state officials all across the country raced to provide communities with important information regarding the disease and relief programs to support families and businesses. Unfortunately, this crucial information was only provided in English, putting non-English speakers at greater risk of not receiving much needed
government assistance. Due to the lack of translated materials, minority community organizations had to learn about these programs and then prepare their own materials to disseminate the information to their communities.
What we need:
Disaster response and relief programs/systems must be able to provide all crucial information in several languages to ensure that everyone has access to vital and potentially life-saving information.
Support H.R. 1009: COVID-19 Language Access Act
On February 11, 2021, Congressmember Grace Meng (NY-6) introduced H.R. 1009: COVID-19 Language Access Act. This act proposes to require all federal government agencies to translate all written COVID-19 related materials into multiple languages. KACE supports this act and believes COVID-19 Language Access Act should be passed in the 117th
Congress and it also be expanded to any disasters that may hit the U.S. in the future. We must have our federal and state government agencies to translate their disaster related information into multiple languages.
