하원 정부개혁 감독위 `미주 한인 공로 결의안’ 채택

 미국 하원 정부개혁감독위원회, 3월 4일 전체회의를 열어 스캇 가렛 뉴저지 연방하원 제 5지역구 의원이 제출한 미국 사회에서 미주 한인들의 기여를 평가하고 인정하는 결의안을 채택했다.

   이 결의안(H.Res. 103-Resolution recognizing the contributions of Korean Americans to the United States)은 다음주 화요일(3월 9일) 하원 본회의에서 의결될 예정이다.

결의안 핵심 – “미국인들은 미주 한인들이 미국 사회에서 기여한 매우 소중한 공헌을 인정한다”.

결의안 내용들

– 1903년 1월13일 102명의 한인 이민자가 미국땅에 첫발을 디딘 후 한인 이민역사를 다루면서 한국전쟁의 참상, 폐허와 빈곤을 딛고 기회를 찾아 미국으로 향한 이민자들의 삶도 소개.

– “100만명이 넘는 미국내 한인들이 그들의 뿌리를 한국에 두고 있으며, 미주 한인들은 미국땅에서 돈독한 가정을 꾸리고, 다이내믹한 공동체를 만들었다”고 평가.

-매년 1월13일이 `미주 한인의 날’로 지정돼 있다는 사실을 상기시키면서 “한인들은 예술, 과학, 기술, 의학, 정부, 국방, 교육, 경제 등 미국 사회의 각 분야에서 중요한 역할을 하며 기여하고 있다”는 결의안 채택 배경을 설명.

결의안 발의과정에서 유권자 센터의 김동석 소장은 가렛 의원과 함께 하원 의원 50명의 서명을 이끌어내는데 주도적 역할을 했다.

결의안 채택은 “미국 사회내 한인들의 역할을 평가받은 것이며, 한인 동포들의 시민 풀뿌리 운동의 영향력을 연방의회 차원에서 확인받은 것이다. 뿐만 아니라  한인사회는 미국의 번영과 발전에 기여하고 있는 유능한 소수계로 인정 받는 계기가 되었다.

Korean Americans have contributed significantly to the culture and economy of the United States.  January 13, 2010 marked the 107th anniversary of the beginning of Korean immigration to the United States.  There are now more than a million and a half people of Korean descent living in the United States.
 
Korean Americans have helped build our communities and our nation.  They have added significantly to the development of the arts, sciences, engineering, medicine, government, military, education, and the economy in the United States.

Recognizing the contributions of Korean Americans to the United States;
Whereas on January 13, 1903, the arrival of 102 pioneer Korean immigrants to the United States marked the first chapter of Korean immigration to America;
 
Whereas the Korean War began 60 years ago this June and impacted the lives of millions of Koreans;
 
Whereas thousands of Koreans, fleeing from war and poverty, came to the United States seeking opportunities;
 
Whereas Korean Americans, like thousands of immigrants to the United States before them, have built strong families and contributed to dynamic communities;
 
Whereas more than a million people in the United States can trace their roots Korea;
 
Whereas the Centennial Committees of Korean Immigration and Korean Americans have designated January 13 of each year as `Korean American Day’ to commemorate the first step of the long and prosperous journey of Korean Americans in the United States;
 
Whereas Korean Americans have contributed significantly to the development of the arts, sciences, engineering, medicine, government, military, education and the economy in the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives urges all people in the United States to recognize the invaluable contributions Korean Americans have made to this Nation.
