October 19, 2011: Korean American Voters’ Council (KAVC) held a District 37 and Bergen County Candidate Forum press conference at Woori America Bank in Fort Lee, NJ. The forums are created to let voters know the stances of each candidate and ask them any questions or make comments they might have before the elections. Along with KAVC, representatives from Fort Lee Korean American Association, Palisades Park Korean American Association, New Jersey Dry Cleaners’ Association, Senior Citizen Association of New Jersey, and various staff attended the press conference.

The general election is the first election to be held after Fort Lee was incorporated into District 37 after redistricting in April. Asian Americans comprise over 30% of the total population in District 37, thereby increasing the politicians’ interest for them.

Staff Attorney Chejin Park introduced the schedules for the general election and introduced various candidates in District 37 and Bergen County. He also explained the procedures for the forum. In addition, he asked for advice from other organizations to make sure they are incorporated into the forum.

President Dongchan Kim urged Koreans to participate as this will be a great opportunity to find out how the candidates want to take care of the Korean American community. Also, he cautioned that if the voter turnout is low compared to the great interest in the Korean American community, it may be hard for the community to fight for its rights.
