On Friday, July 22 2011, KAVC (Korean American
Voters’ Council) interns met with City Councilm
an Mark Weprin and presented their “Buy Local, Shop Smartcampaign.

The “Buy Local, Shop Smart” campaign intends to show that when a
local consumer shifts 10% of his economic spending from chain stores to local
stores,
the economic impact to the
community
is increased three times. By educating the public about this
coalition,
the consumer will learn that job opportunities increase and the currency
circulates inside the economy.

Mark Weprin commended the interns, who are
voluntarily taking steps to bringing prosperity to the economy. He also added
that he is willing to give his full support to this campaign. Weprin stated
that his area’s residents consist of many Korean and Chinese Americans, but the
low voting rate leads to a lack of representation in the community. Even though
there are more 2
nd and 3rd generation Korean Americans who
pursue highly educated professions, the vote participation rate within the 2
nd
and 3
rd generation Korean Americans remains low. Mark Weprin knows
that students are participating in voter registration campaigns and encouraged the
interns for their efforts. Weprin told the interns that if many Korean
Americans vote, then Korean Community will attract attention from other communities
or politicians.
