유권자 센터 뉴욕한인회 미주한인의 날 한인상 대상

1월 13일 맨하탄 타임스스퀘어 메리엇 마퀴스 호텔에서 열린 ‘제 51주년 뉴욕한인의 밤 / 미주 한인의 날’ 기념식에서 1000여명이 참석한 가운데, 한인 유권자 센터가 올해의 한인상 대상을 받았다.

이날 ‘전진(Stepping Forward)’이라는 주제로 열린 기념식에는 디나 폴리 뉴욕주 감사원장, 마이크 블룸버그 뉴욕시장 그리고  존리우 뉴욕시 감사원장이 참석하여 축사를 했다.

이날 뉴욕한인회(회장 하용화)의 상을 수여한 사람들은 다음과 같다.

뉴욕뉴저지한인유권자센터 ‘한인상 대상’을, 조종무 뉴욕한인회 50년사 편찬위원장과 박동주 뉴욕한인수산인협회장에게 한인상(커뮤니티봉사).

존 오 미 육군 군의관(공익부문), 미셸 박 스틸 캘리포니아주 제3지구 가주 조세형평위원(정치력 신장 부문), ABC방송 주주 장 앵커(미디어 부문), 서효석 편강한의원 원장(공로상), 미 의약품 회사 파이저사(비즈니스 부문) 등에 특별상을 시상했다.

이날 유권자  센터는 수상 소감을 아래와 같이 밝혔다.

유권자 센터는 1992년 LA에서 일어난 4.29 폭동을 보면서, 이민와서 피땀으로 일군 우리들의 꿈이 한순간 잿더미로 변했고, 피해자 였던 한인들이 졸지에 인종차별 집단으로 매도 당하고, 그 누구도 한인들의 억울한 현실을 위해서 목소리를 높여주지 않았던 한인 이민 최악의 비극을 보면서, 출발했습니다.

The Korean American Voters’ Council was created in the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, in which we witnessed that the fruit of our hard labor destroyed in an instant, Koreans were portrayed as being racist perpetrators while we were the victims, and no one defended us from these accusations.

소수계 연대도 한인 커뮤니티의 결집과 전략이 없으면 아무런 의미가 없다는 것을 그때 우리는 깨닳았습니다.

From the Riots, we learned a lesson: without Korean community’s own coherence and strategies to survive, the solidarity among minority communities was meaningless.

아무리 뛰어난 재능을 가지고 주요한 직위에 있는 한인들이 있다고 해도, 한인 커뮤니티의 현실을 이해하고, 가슴으로 받아 안을 수 있는 확고한 정체성이 없으면 전체 한인들의 발전에 아무런 도움이 되지 못하였습니다.

Despite the fact that there are many talented Koreans in American society, if they do not understand the stark reality of the Korean community and have not realized the need to embrace it, they do not provide any form of help to the greater good of Korean-Americans.

유권자 센터는 지난 15년동안 유권자 등록, 투표율 향상, 커뮤니티를 위해 일할 새 일꾼을 키우기 위한 노력과, 소수계로써 미국 사회에서 생존하고, 발전하고 나아가 존경받는 시민이 되기 위해서, 미국의 풀뿌리 민주주의 제도에 적극 참여하기 위한 노력을 해왔습니다.

To participate in American political process, as a grassroots organization, KAVC has concentrated its efforts on voter registration, increasing voter turnouts, and raising new leaders for the community. For the past 15 years, we have been striving to make Korean-Americans known and get the respect that we deserve.

나아가 한인 커뮤니티는 스스로의 노력으로 만든 정치력으로 모국과 미국이 더욱 더 좋은 관계로 발전하도록 노력해야만 하는 숙명적인 위치에 있다는 것을 깨닳았습니다.

In addition, we have realized that we are in a crucial position where we must work diligently to help improve the relationship between Korea and the US through our self-developed grassroots influence in politics.

지난 기간동안 유권자 센터가 활동할 수 있도록 사랑해주신 모든 동포들께 감사드리고, 특히 어려운 시기를 극복할 수 있도록 아낌없는 후원을 해준 모든 관계자들께 감사드립니다.

We sincerely thank each and every one of our fellow Korean Americans that have supported KAVC.

유권자 센터에게 이 상을 주기로 결정한 뉴욕한인회에 다시 한번 감사를 드리고, 이 상이 앞으로 더욱 더 열심히 활동하라는 격려라고 생각하고 더욱 더 긴장해서 노력하겠습니다.

 We express our gratitude to the Korean American Association of Greater New York for presenting this award to us. We will take this award as an encouragement to fight even harder for Korean-Americans.
