On July 27th, 2010 NY KAVC interns visited Assemblywoman Grace Meng’s office. The interns discussed with the assemblywoman about the recent issues of the local community and learned about the functions of the local government.
Grace Meng and the interns began the discussion with the issues regarding the Flushing Commons. Grace Meng said although she supports the project, she feels that more compensation should be made to the small businesses on the periphery of the construction site.
The interns also asked if there were any other factors that led to such immediate decision. Grace Meng replied that there was no evidence to such claims.
Grace Meng also explained to the interns about some of the reforms that she had sponsored, as an example of the role of the local government.
Lastly, the interns asked the assemblywoman to give advice to the Korean American youths. Grace Meng advised them to take what they had learned at KAVC and use that experience to become active participants in American politics.
