New York – 2009 Important Election Dates

Last Day to Register Before Primary – 08/21/09
Primary Election – 09/15/09
Last Day to Register Before General – 10/09/09

New York City Mayor (1 position)
The Mayor of the City of New York is head of the executive branch of New York City’s government. The Mayor’s office administers all city services, public property, police and fire protection, most public agencies, and enforces all city and state laws within New York City.

New York City Public Advocate (1 position)
The office of Public Advocate of New York is a citywide elected position in New York City, which is first in line to succeed the Mayor. The office serves as a direct link between the electorate and city government, effectively acting as a watchdog for New Yorkers.

New York City Council (51 positions)
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of the City of New York. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five boroughs. The council monitors performance of city agencies and makes land use decisions as well as legislating on a variety of other issues. The City Council also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget and each member is limited to three consecutive terms in office.
