Subject           U.S. House Committee on International Relations Votes “Yes”

On September 13, 2006, H. Res. 759 (Mandating Japan’s Formal Acceptance and Acknowledgement of its War Crimes against “Comfort Women”) passed the International Relations Committee with a unanimous vote from all Democrats and Republicans present. The term refers to the hundreds of thousands of women Japan abducted or lured to serve Japanese soldiers during the war years.

It has been almost three months since the Korean American Voters’ Council of NY/NJ (“KAVC”) began an initiative to support this resolution. In addition to holding petition drives and seminars in the community, KAVC directors have been meeting with many congressmen to discuss their support of this resolution, and are scheduled to meet many more in the weeks to come.

The resolution mandates that Japan:
1. formally acknowledge and accept responsibility for its sexual enslavement of young women, known to the world as “comfort women,” during its colonial occupation of Asia and the Pacific Islands from the 1930s through the duration of World War II;
2. educate current and future generations about this horrible crime against humanity;
3. publicly, strongly, and repeatedly refute any claims that the subjugation and enslavement of comfort women never occurred; and
4. follow the recommendations of the United Nations and Amnesty International with respect to the “comfort women.”

KAVC looks forward to collaborating its efforts with all sponsors of the bill in enlisting support from all members of Congress, thereby producing concrete results pertaining to this issue.
