On April 26, 2007, the first day of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to the United States, 121 Coalition printed a full-page ad in the Washington Post.
It appeared on Page 6 of the main news section.
The ad cost $39,000. Nearly all of the money was raised at the grassroots-level by the NY chapter of 121 Coalition (Greater NY Support 121 Coalition) and the DC chapter of 121 Coalition (Greater Washington Support 121 Coalition). Most of the donations were made at the $20-$100 level by concerned individuals.
Young-Soo Lee, survivor from Korea, collected and presented a contribution of nearly $2,000 in cash on April 24th specifically for the Washington Post ad.
We are grateful to Washington Coalition for Comfort Women issues, a member of the coalition, who made a $500 contribution to the ad and allowed us to use their 501(c)(3) status so that we could qualify for the Washington Post discounted charity rate.
Amnesty International USA provided significant guidance on the content of the ad.
