Summer Internship Program 2008: Update

The Korean American Voters’ Council (KAVC) began it’s annual Summer Internship Program in New York on June 30. This program is a non-paid, part-time equivalent internship which will span over 6 weeks from June 30 to August 9.

Congratulations to Diane Ahn, Jesse Hong, Sungho (Brian) Jang, James Kim, Soomin (Steven) Kim, Hyo Jeong (Rusia) Lee, Jae Min Lee, Yesung (Ryan) Lee, and Chong No on being selected for the program. This year KAVC has selected 9 interns from a pool of over 40 applicants, which will work with KAVC on community issues with the main focus for this year’s program being voting rights advocacy through grassroots work such as community workshops, voter registration drives, and educational programs on the General Election candidates in various offices.

Over the past two weeks, the interns have been participating in voter registration drives within the local area, collecting over 70 new voter registrations. The interns have also been diligently researching important issues and stances of the Presidential Candidates and Assembly Candidates for the upcoming election to be translated and distributed to the community.

During the course of this program, the interns will also have an opportunity to visit the Queens Board of Elections to get a first-hand look at the process in which a voter is added into the database and to visit Washington, DC, the nation’s Capitol, where Congressman Garrett will personally give the interns a tour of the many Congressional buildings and meeting halls.
