On December 15th, 2011, New York State Senator Tony Avella sent a letter to Japan’s Prime Minister Noda urging Japan’s acknowledgement of its roles in the “comfort women” stations during World War II.

In this letter, Senator Avella stated that he was moved by the “comfort women” event held at the Kupferberg Holocaust Center on December 13th, and was disappointed at Japan’s refusal to acknowledge nor apologize to the “comfort women” victims. Senator Avella urged Japan to exercise its historical responsibility by formally apologizing to the “comfort women” just as the German government did to the victims of Holocaust.
