미국 연방 의원들의 미주 한인의 날 축하 메시지

2003년 미국 의회는 매년 1월 13일을 미주 한인의 날로 공표하였고 이제 11주년을 맞이하였다. 여러 연방 하원 의원들이 미주 한인의 날을 축하하는 다음과 같은 성명서들을 발표하고 시민참여센터에 전달하였다.

연방 하원의원 마이클 혼다 – 캘리포니아 17지구 (Congressman Michael Honda – CA 17)

It is an honor to extend my warmest greetings to all who are celebrating the 111st Anniversary of Korean American Day. I am grateful for the opportunity to extend my support on this momentous day.

As Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, I am proud to celebrate and acknowledge the indelible contributions and accomplishments of the Korean American community to the grander fabric and story of America. One hundred and eleven years ago, on January 13, 102 men, women and children traveled from the Korean Peninsula, aboard the S.S. Gaelic, and landed in Hawaii- marking the first entry of Korean immigrants on U.S. shores. Since their arrival, the Korean American community has enriched our nation’s society, culture, economy and arts -becoming the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. and male diver to win back-to-back diving gold medals; to serving with distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces, and high level posts in our current Administration and judicial seats; while making invaluable strides in entrepreneurship and medicine; and bridging the ties between U.S. and South Korea.

I feel a particular sense of family and affection to Korean-Americans, and to Korea, where I have traveled numerous times. Without a doubt, Korean Americans have played a critical role in my hometown and congressional district (CA-17) -contributing to our community and diversity. Diversity enriches our nation and I hope every American will take this opportunity to learn and share in the Korean culture. Today, alongside the nearly two million Korean Americans across our nation, including over 16,000 in my district of CA-17, I am honored to celebrate their continued journey.

한인의 날을 기념하며, 저는 미국의 구조와 역사에 한인 사회의 잊을 수 없는 공헌과 업적에 감사를 표하고 축하를 할 수 있어 자랑스럽습니다. 111년 전 1월 13일, 102명의 남녀 및 아이들이 한반도에서 증기선 갤릭(Gaelic)호를 타고 미주 한인 이민자들의 첫 터전이었던 하와이에 도착했습니다. 그들의 도착 이래, 한인 사회는 우리 나라의 사회, 문화, 경제 및 예술의 가치를 드높여 왔습니다. 한인들은 미국에 올림픽 금메달을 안겨준 첫 아시안계 미국인이자 올림픽 다이빙에서 연속 금메달을 획득한 남자 다이버 선수를 배출하고, 1차 및 2차 세계 전쟁과 6.25 전쟁 당시 미군에서 뛰어나게 복무하였고, 우리 현 행정부와 사법부에서 높은 보직에 위치해 있고, 사업과 의학 분야에서 귀중한 성과를 내었고, 미국과 한국을 연결시키고 있습니다. 저는 한인들과 지난주에 방문한 한국에 가족과 같은 특별한 애정을 느낍니다. 그리고 특히 한인들이 우리 사회와 다양성에 중요한 역할을 해오고 있는 캘리포니아 17지역구를 대표하여 영광입니다. 오늘, 저는 우리 나라 전역의 약 2백만 한인들과 함께 그들의 계속된 여정을 기념할 수 있어 영광으로 생각합니다.

연방 하원의원 에드 로이스 – 캘리포니아 39지구 (Congressman Ed Royce – CA 39)

I am pleased to offer my greetings and best wishes to all those participating in Korean American Day. This year, we celebrate the 111th anniversary of Korean American Day and we honor the men and women of the Korean American community, as well as their contributions to society. Korean immigrants have become a key part of our country. Hundreds, if not, thousands of Korean Americans are also serving in our nation’s military, as well as the local, state, and federal levels of government. Their hard work and dedication should be duly noted, and I strongly encourage the Korean American community to continue in their service.

In the last 60 years, we have witnessed South Korea as an example of the rise above poverty into an economically strong nation. Today, South Korea is one of the United States’ strongest allies and 7th largest trading partner. As Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I am committed to the strong relationship between the United States and South Korea.

I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work in organizing this event and for helping make this event possible. I wish you a successful event and a prosperous new year!

한인의 날을 기념하는 모든 분들께 축하한다는 말씀을 전할 수 있어서 기쁩니다. 이번 2014년은 한인 이민 역사의 111주년을 맞는 해이고, 한인 사회의 모든 일원과 사회의 발전에 기여한 것을 기념합니다. 한인 이민자들은 우리 미국 사회의 일부분이 되었습니다. 수 많은 한인들이 군과 정부의 일원으로써 미국을 더 강하게 만들고 있습니다. 이들의 노고와 헌신을 꼭 기억해야되고, 한인들의 더 적극적인 참여를 기원합니다.

지난 60년 간, 한국이 전쟁의 폐허를 지나 경제 강대국으로 성장하는 것을 세계가 보았습니다. 이제 한국은 미국이 신뢰하는 동맹 국가이며 7번째로 큰 무역 파트너입니다. 연방 하원 외교위원회의 회장으로서 한국과 미국과의 관계를 더 돈독히 만들기 위해 노력하겠습니다.

한인의 날을 준비하시는 여러분께 감사를 표하고, 새해 복 많이 받으시기 바랍니다.

연방 하원의원 피터 로스캄 – 일리노이 6지구 (Congressman Peter Roskam – IL 6)

I write to send my encouragement on the occasion of Korean American Day and the 111th anniversary of recognizing Korean immigration to the United States. While my responsibilities in Congress prevent me from being with you this evening, I want to wish you all the best as you join together to celebrate the many important contributions of Korean Americans to our history and culture.

Our two countries share a deep and sustained friendship. As the son of a Korean War veteran, I have a foundational appreciation for the shared history between the U.S. and Korea. Passage of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement was a historic milestone, and will strengthen this alliance that is of such tremendous strategic importance. Throughout our history, the Korean American community has been a vibrant part of American business, art, culture, and more. Korean American Day reminds us to deeply appreciate this legacy of partnership and prosperity.

I join with your family and friends in celebrating this special occasion. I look forward to working with you in the days ahead on issues of mutual interest.

한인의 날과 한인 이민 111주년을 축하하기 위해 이렇게 우편을 보냅니다. 한인 사회가 미국 역사와 문화에 공헌한 것을 기념하고 싶습니다.

한국과 미국은 깊고 오래가는 우정을 유지하고 있습니다. 한국전 참전용사의 아들로써 한국과 미국이 공유하는 역사를 매우 각별하게 생각하고 있습니다. 한미 FTA는 역사에 남을 큰 발자국이고 저희 각 나라의 우정을 더욱 돈독하게 만들 것입니다. 역사를 보면 한인 사회는 미국의 경제, 예술, 문화 등 모든 부분에 영향을 미치고 한 부분이 되어왔습니다. 한인의 날은 우리 모두에게 한국과 미국의 공통점을 기억하게 만들고, 서로 간의 우정을 다시 한 번 생각해볼 수 있는 날입니다.

여러분과 함게 한인의 날을 기념합니다. 한국과 미국, 각 국의 공동 이익을 위하여 계속 일하겠습니다.

연방 하원의원 스캇 가렛 – 뉴저지 5지구 (Congressman Scott Garrett – NJ 5)

On Korean-American Day, it is with great pleasure that I extend my sincerest and best wishes to all of our Korean-American friends. I am proud to honor their heritage and contributions to our great nation.

Since the arrival of 102 pioneer Korean immigrants to Hawaii, Korean-Americans have demonstrated their commitment to the well-being of our community through their dedication to freedom and hard work. The Korean-American community has long been regarded as an important community in the Fifth Congressional District, and Korean-Americans continue to remain an energetic force within this country.

This year, I am proud to join in with Korean-Americans throughout the United States as they celebrate this memorable occasion, and I am especially honored to represent you in New Jersey’s Fifth District where I have experienced- first hand- the crucial role Korean-Americans have played in our community. I am certain that Korean-Americans will continue to expand on their already impressive accomplishments.

이번 한인의 날을 여러분과 함께 축하할 수 있음에 감사합니다. 우리의 위대한 국가를 위해 공헌한 한인 사회의 역사와 수고를 기념할 수 있게 돼서 자랑스럽습니다.

하와이에 102명의 한인들이 정착했을 때 부터, 한인들은 미국 사회를 위해 많은 일들을 해냈습니다. 연방 하원 5지역구에서 한인사회는 매우 중요하게 여겨지고, 저희 지역과 나라를 바꾸는 강한 힘이 되길 바랍니다.

여러분이 만드는 기적을 매일 보게 되서 큰 영광이고, 의회에서 여러분을 대표할 수 있다는 것에 큰 자부심을 느낍니다. 여러분과 함께 한인의 날을 기념하고, 한인 사회가 앞으로 더 성장하고 발전해서 우리 사회와 나라를 위해 많은 공헌을 꾸준히 할 것이라고 믿습니다.

연방 하원의원 스티브 이스라엘 – 뉴욕 3지구 (Congressman Steve Israel – NY 3)

I want to express my best wishes to Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) and the Korean Community as we celebrate Korean American Day. I commend KACE for continuing to fight to empower and mobilize the Korean American community to take local action for the betterment of our society.

I look forward to many years ahead of friendship with the Korean community and I congratulate and thank Korean American Civic Empowerment for its continued hard work.

미주 한인의 날을 기념하며 미주 한인 사회와 시민참여센터의 공헌을 축하합니다. 특별히 우리 사회를 발전시키기 위해 꾸준히 일하는 시민참여센터의 노력을 축하합니다.

한인 사회와 앞으로도 계속 함께 일하는 것을 기대하고 한인의 날을 다시 한 번 축하드립니다.

On this Korean American Day, the 111th anniversary of the Korean immigration to the United States, I am honored to congratulate the Korean American community for their profound contributions to the betterment of our society. The rich traditions and proud history of this community have played a part in the vibrancy of America and have helped shape our country into the nation it is today.

The achievements of Korean Americans in our country are commendable, and I encourage organizations like KACE to keep up their noble cause to ensure their communities continue to thrive.

한인의 이민 역사 111주년을 맞이하는 이 한인의 날에, 미국 사회의 발전을 위해 기여한 한인 사회를 격려하고 축하합니다. 한인 사회의 전통과 자랑스러운 역사를 통해 미국이 더 빛나게 되었고 미국의 발전을 이끌어 나가고 있다고 생각합니다.

한인들이 미국 사회에 공헌한 것을 생각하면 정말 자랑스럽고, 한인 사회와 미국 사회의 발전을 위해 항상 노력하는 여러분을 격려합니다.

연방 하원의원 제럴드 카널리 – 버지니아 11지구 (Congressman Gerald Connolly – VA 11)

As co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Korea, it is my great honor to join you in celebrating the 2014 Korean American Day, which recognizes the 111th anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States. As you know, on January 13, 1903, 102 Korean pioneers landed in Hawaii to work in the sugar cane fields. The number of Korean Americans now living in the United States has grown to nearly 2 million people, and the Washington metropolitan region has the third-largest Korean population in the country behind New York City and Los Angeles.

The 11th Congressional District of Virginia is enriched by many diverse cultures, including more than 32,000 people of Korean ancestry. This diversity and vibrancy has enriched the entire region and helped to strengthen our robust economy, excellent schools, and strong family values. Korean-Americans help their communities across the United States in countless ways. They serve in the military; run for public office; work in local, state, and national government; help new immigrants adjust to life here; and assist their neighbors in need regardless of nationality.

Therefore, it is very fitting that we celebrate Korean American Day every January 13 and take a moment to thank our neighbors and friends of Korean descent for helping to make the United States a stronger and better country. I look forward to continuing to work with the Korean-American community towards the achievement of our common goals.

연방 한국 코커스의 회장으로서 2014년 한인의 날을 축하하게 되어서 큰 영광입니다. 한인의 날은 한인 이민 111주년을 기념하는 날입니다. 111년 전, 한인 102명이 사탕수수밭에 일하기 위해 미국 하와이에 처음 도착했습니다. 이제 미국에 사는 한인들의 인구가 약 2백만명이 되고, 워싱턴 지역에는 뉴욕과 LA 다음으로 미국에서 3번째로 큰 한인 인구가 거주하고 있습니다.

제 11 지역구는 많은 문화와 민족들이 함께 살고 있고 3만2천명의 한인들이 거주하고 있습니다. 이 다민족/다문화성이 워싱턴 지역을 더 풍요롭게 만들었고 강한 지역 경제와 좋은 학군을 만들었습니다.

매년 1월 13일, 주위에 사는 한인들에게 미국을 강하고 더 좋은 나라로 만들어준 것에 감사를 표하는 것은 당연한 것입니다. 한인 사회와 지속적으로 우리의 사회를 가꿔나가겠습니다.
