미주 한인의 날 (Korean American Day)

2003년 미의회는 1월 13일을 미주 한인의 날로 공표하였고 이제10주년을 맞이하였다. 여러 연방 의원들이 미주한인의 날을 축하하는 다음과 같은 성명서들을 발표하고 시민참여센터에 보내왔다.

Congressman Scott Garrett (New Jersey 5th District)

The Korean American community has long been regarded as a central part of the Fifth Congressional District.  Each year on Korean American Day, families come together to celebrate the many contributions of the Korean community.  I am proud to join them in these celebrations.

Korean American immigrants have made untold contributions to American society.  They have raised strong families and built successful businesses, dynamic communities, active civic associations, churches, and charities.  Thousands of Korean Americans are currently serving in our Armed Forces and many of them are deployed overseas keeping our nation safe from terrorism.  Whether in military, education, science, business, or the arts, Korean Americans have played and continue to play a vital role in shaping communities throughout the country. 

I am pleased to take this opportunity to recognize the many contributions that Korean Americans have made to our nation.  To all the Korean American families in the Fifth Congressional District, I wish you a blessed Korean American Day.

스캇 가렛 연방 하원 의원 (뉴저지 5지역구)

한인 사회는 연방 하원 5지역구의 중심으로 오랫동안 잘 알려져 왔습니다. 매년 미주 한인의 날에 여러 가족들이 함께 모여 한인 사회의 공헌을 축하하고 있습니다. 저도 함께 축하할 수 있음에 자랑스럽습니다.

한인 이민자들은 미국 사회에 막대한 기여를 해왔습니다. 한인들은 건강한 가정을 꾸리며  성공적인 사업, 역동적인 공동체, 적극적인 시민 단체, 교회, 및 자선단체들을 세워왔습니다. 수천명의 한인들이 현재 우리 미군에서 복무하고 있고, 그 중 많은 사람들이 해외로 파견되어 테러로부터 우리 나라를 지키고 있습니다. 군사, 교육, 과학, 비즈니스, 또는 예술에 상관없이, 한인들은 국내 도처에서 우리 사회를 형성하는데 중요한 역할을 계속해서 해오고 있습니다.

저는 한인들이 우리 나라를 위한 많은 기여를 알 수 있어 기쁘게 생각합니다. 모든 연방 5지역구의 한인 가족들에게 축복된 한인의 날이 되길 기원합니다.

Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr (New Jersey 9th District)

As our country spent the weekend observing Korean American Day, we must recognize the significant contributions Korean Americans have made to the success of our nation.  Like so many of our ancestors, Korean Americans have come to this country to make a better life for themselves and their families. I am proud to represent such a thriving community of Korean Americans in Northern New Jersey. Their vibrant culture and entrepreneurial spirit truly make our state a better place to live.

빌 파스크렐 주니어 연방 하원 의원 (뉴저지 9지역구)

우리 나라가 한인의 날을 맞이한 주말을 보내면서, 우리는 한인들이 우리 나라의 성공에 중요한 기여를 해왔다는 것을 알아야합니다. 우리의 많은 조상들이 그러하였듯, 한인들은 자신과 자신의 가족들의 더 나은 삶을 만들기 위하여 이 나라에 왔습니다. 저는 북부 뉴저지의 번성한 한인 커뮤니티를 대표할 수 있어 자랑스럽습니다. 한인들의 활기찬 문화와 기업가 정신은 정말 우리 주를 더 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들고 있습니다.

Mike Honda (California 15th District)

As we commemorate Korean American Day, I am proud to celebrate and acknowledge the indelible contributions and accomplishments of the Korean American community to the fabric and story of America. One hundred and ten years ago, on January 13, 102 men, women and children traveled from the Korean Peninsula, aboard the S.S. Gaelic, and landed in Hawaii – marking the first entry of Korean immigrants on U.S. shores. Since their arrival, the Korean American community has enriched our nation’s society, culture, economy and arts – becoming the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. and male diver to win back-to-back diving gold medals; to serving with distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I, II and the Korean Conflict, as well in high level posts in our current Administration and judicial seats; while making invaluable strides in entrepreneurship and medicine; and bridging the ties between U.S. and South Korea. I feel a particular sense of family and affection to Korean Americans, and to Korea, where I recently traveled in the past week. And I am especially honored to represent California’s 17th District, where I know Korean Americans have played a critical role in our community and diversity. Today, alongside the nearly two million Korean Americans across our nation, I am honored to celebrate their continued journey.

마이크 혼다 연방 하원 의원 (캘리포니아 15지역구)

한인의 날을 기념하며, 저는 미국의 구조와 역사에 한인 사회의 잊을 수 없는 공헌과 업적에 감사를 표하고 축하를 할 수 있어 자랑스럽습니다. 110년 전 1월 13일, 102명의 남녀 및 아이들이 한반도에서 증기선 갤릭(Gaelic)호를 타고 미주 한인 이민자들의 첫 터전이었던 하와이에 도착했습니다. 그들의 도착 이래, 한인 사회는 우리 나라의 사회, 문화, 경제 및 예술의 가치를 드높여 왔습니다. 한인들은 미국에 올림픽 금메달을 안겨준 첫 아시안계 미국인이자 올림픽 다이빙에서 연속 금메달을 획득한 남자 다이버 선수를 배출하고, 1차 및 2차 세계 전쟁과 6.25 전쟁 당시 미군에서 뛰어나게 복무하였고, 우리 현 행정부와 사법부에서 높은 보직에 위치해 있고, 사업과 의학 분야에서 귀중한 성과를 내었고, 미국과 한국을 연결시키고 있습니다. 저는 한인들과 지난주에 방문한 한국에 가족과 같은 특별한 애정을 느낍니다. 그리고 특히 한인들이 우리 사회와 다양성에 중요한 역할을 해오고 있는 캘리포니아 17지역구를 대표하여 영광입니다. 오늘, 저는 우리 나라 전역의 약 2백만 한인들과 함께 그들의 계속된 여정을 기념할 수 있어 영광으로 생각합니다.
